6.3. Toolholders balance
Definition of unbalance
U nbalance is a d isp la ce m e n t o f the c e n te r o f gra vity o f the rotating m ass fro m th e axis o f rotation.
The rotating m ass includes: m achine spindle, toolholder, interm ediate com ponents (collets), other
additional e lem ents o f to o lh o ld e rs (nuts) and tool T he reason o f unbala nce is g e o m e tric asym m etry,
tolerance of, m ounting errors, etc. U nbalance causes vibration o f the setup, w hich reduce tool life
and decrease quality o f m achining. To lim it to an acceptable level o f unbalance m inim ize clearances
on the spindle and set suitable tools and toolholders. F or m ost dem anding applications it m ay be
necessary not only balancing the toolholders, but also the tools.
Balancing
B alancing is to reduce the unb a la n ce by m oving th e c e n te r o f rotating m ass in th e d irection o f th e axis.
T his is d one by ensuring th e p ro p e r g e o m e try and adding addition al w e ig h t o r rem oving.
This target can only be achieved to som e degree, as w ill alw ays be residual unbalance.
Balance accuracy classes
From an e co n o m ic persp e ctive it is not profitable to o m uch tig h te n in g o f re q u ire m e n ts fo r rotating
m ass balance . In o rd e r to a ch ie ve a c o m p ro m ise be tw e e n th e te ch n ica l and e c o n o m ic a spects,
norm ISO 1940 introduced balance accu ra cy classes. It identifies th e types o f applicatio ns fo r each
class, and so:
- G 6,3 class is designed fo r m achine parts and general use m achines
- G 2,5 class is designed fo r high speed m achine parts.
